Fire prevention update Level 1, 2 and 3

Fire prevention refresher courses, for the periodic renewal of the training of fire prevention team workers.

As established by the art. 37 paragraph 9 of Legislative Decree 81/08, workers who have been entrusted with fire prevention and firefighting activities must receive adequate and specific training, as well as a periodic five-year update.

To meet the numerous requests for explanations, the Department of Fire Brigade, Public Rescue and Civil Defense – General Directorate for Training has published a circular (Fire Brigade circular prot. 12653 of 23 February 2011), according to the which updates should be distributed as follows:

  • Update for Firefighters working at fire risk Level 1: 2 hours;
  • Update for Firefighters working at fire risk Level 2: 5 hours;
  • Firefighters update working at fire risk Level 3: 8 hours.

 

The contents of the fire prevention refresher course are related to the type of activity of the company and its level of fire risk, as well as the specific tasks entrusted to the fire prevention workers, in accordance with what is indicated in the Ministerial Decree. September 2, 2021.

The Fire Update, based on the risk class to which the company belongs, as indicated by the Ministerial Decree. September 2, 2021, can be level 1 (2 hours), 2 (5 hours) or 3 (8 hours).

Theoretical and practical tests will be carried out to evaluate the knowledge acquired during the course; a certificate of participation/training will be issued to those who successfully pass them.

    How often does it need to be done?

    The fire prevention refresher course is regulated by the Ministerial Decree. 2 September 2021 in the contents of the training course and in the art. 37 of Legislative Decree 81/2008 in the mandatory updating. Therefore, an update time of 5 years is considered suitable.

    Update Schedule

    NOTE: the duration of the topics covered will be modulated based on the level of risk Fire and prevention
    • principles of combustion;
    • combustion products, extinguishing substances in relation to the type of fire;
    • effects of fire on humans;
    • prohibitions and limitations on exercise;
    • behavioral measures
    • Fire protection and procedures to be adopted in case of fire main fire protection measures;
    • evacuation in case of fire;
    • call for help.

    Practise:
    • review and clarifications on portable fire extinguishers;
    • instructions on the use of portable fire extinguishers.

    Teaching Methodology

    The firefighting refresher course includes frontal lessons in the classroom with a teacher who is an expert in the subject. During the course, the teacher will be able to make use of PowerPoint presentations and video clips, furthermore intermediate tests and final tests, problem solving and group work will be carried out. The teacher will try to stimulate conversation among the participants, in order to involve them and solicit their interest, so that everyone can contribute by bringing their own personal experience. If foreseen in the course program, practical tests will be carried out.

    Course teachers

    The teachers of the fire prevention refresher course are qualified professionals in the fields of workplace safety and fire emergency techniques for companies, with at least three years of experience in the sector.

    Training Certificate

    At the end of the course, each participant of the fire-fighting refresher course will be issued a training certificate valid throughout Italy, suitable for the renewal of the qualification of fire-fighting officer of the company emergency team, in accordance with the requirements set out in Legislative Decree 81/ 2008.
